Jawa Pitu Band (album launch)
For over 10 years, The Jawa Pitu Band has been one of Melbourne’s best-kept secrets. Now, they’re stepping into the light to launch their second album Kapindho, and they're throwing a massive celebration of Nusantara, the vast Indonesian Archipelago, to mark the occasion.
The Jawa Pitu Band’s sound draws deep from the well of dangdut — 1970s Indonesia's intoxicating fusion of Javanese, Hindustani, Malay, Arabic, and Western influences — weaving it together with the meditative pulse of gamelan, the improvisation of jazz, and the irresistible drive of funk. The result is music that defies category and moves bodies.
Doors open at 8pm music starts at 8:30pm with Sekar Kidul, Melbourne's Sundanese Kacapi Suling ensemble, conjuring the spacious sounds of zither, flute, and percussion. From there, the night unfolds into Reog Ponorogo (Javanese Giant Mask Dance) and Pencak Silat (Sundanese martial arts) performances. The Sanggar Lestari Indonesian dance troupe will then keep the audience spellbound, before The Jawa Pitu Band take to the stage for a massive 90-minute set with special guests.
The night closes with a celebratory DJ set from Small Fry of RRR FM's Mooncake, playing underground grooves from across Asia and providing the perfect backdrop to celebrate the release of Kapindho with all performers from the evening.
CDs, our very own Zine and the first ever Jawa Pitu Band T-shirts will all be on sale during the evening.
