This week Sarah Rossy (CAN), Imogen Cygle and Jamie Lena Kerslake are stopping by for a show.
Sarah Rossy is a Lebanese-Canadian performer, composer, producer, and educator based in Tio’tia:ke/Montreal. Her multidisciplinary work blends jazz, live-processed electronics, and tender songwriting. In 2019, Sarah began ancestral research with the Arrivals Legacy Project, a process that now deeply informs her creative work. She has collaborated with artists such as Meredith Monk, GEORGE, Thanya Iyer, No Cosmos, Forager (NPR Tiny Desk) and many more. In 2021, Sarah was appointed Artistic Director of the feminist choir Chœur Maha, and joined the faculty of Dawson College as a Professor of Music. The interdisciplinary nature of Sarah's artistic practice now includes education as a tool for social justice, empowerment, and transformation.
Imogen Cygler is a contemporary composer, performer and producer. A Lecturer in Interactive Composition and a graduate in the Master of Music (Research) - Interactive Composition at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, she recently released her debut album, ‘Sometimes Strangers’. In addition to regular performances with her own ensemble, Imogen has performed in the live shows of Ben Lee, Jade Alice, Jacob Diamond, Hannah Cameron, Happy Axe, Lack the Low, Isobel Caldwell and Sunfruits. “The term ‘genre-defying’ gets tossed around a lot. Rare is the album that really deserves that title, but Imogen Cygler’s spellbinding ‘Sometimes Strangers’ truly earns it. Mixing sophisticated composition with crafty songwriting, it’s at turns sonically gorgeous as well as laugh-out loud funny, as vivid arrangements meet charmingly absurd lyrics. You can hear shades of singular singer-songwriters - Joanna Newsom, Stella Donnelly, Tori Amos – but Cygler’s artistry and originality shines through. This is a collection that effortlessly shapeshifts from baroque to folk to chamber pop and beyond, yet is never in-your-face ambitious, instead opting for a softer, subtler approach that catches you off guard. I guarantee you won’t hear anything quite like ‘Sometimes Strangers’ this year because Imogen Cygler is quite unlike any other artist.” - Al Newstead (Double J, Triple J)
Jamie Lena Kerslake is an alt-folk/soul artist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Kaurna country (Adelaide). Jamie's debut album, 'The Ruins Of An Over-Enthused Heart’, mixed and mastered by Nick Herrera (Danika, Nai Palm) unravels the snags of relationship, grief and politics, all the while wrapped up in a voice of milk & honey. Jamie has played festivals such as St Kilda Festival, and Womadelaide, and supported artists including Ruby Mary Gill, Jack Davies, and Allysha Joy. Her debut EP earned airplay on triple j, landed in APRA’s top 10 Regional Charts, and gained recognition in the South Australian music awards.
