Bento Beats

Bento Beats is a special one-night concert bringing together Japanese taiko, shinobue bamboo flute and didgeridoo in a powerful cross-cultural performance at Northcote Social Club.

From Japan, the concert welcomes two special guest artists: Nakagome Kenta from Taiko Performing Arts Ensemble KODO, and Haruyoshi Tsumura from Miyake Jima Geino Doshi Kai.

Kenta brings the creative power and contemporary energy of KODO, shaped through years of international performance, powerful taiko solos, composition and cross-genre collaboration. Haruyoshi carries the living festival tradition of Miyake taiko from Miyake-jima, a powerful drumming style passed down through the Tsumura family and shared internationally through performances and workshops.

Alongside Ryuji Hamada from Taikoz in Sydney and Sanshi, a Japanese didgeridoo artist based in Perth, Bento Beats creates a unique meeting of Japan and Australia through wood, bamboo, skin, breath and rhythm.

The evening opens with Hachijo Taiko Party, a lively audience-participation taiko experience where everyone is invited to join the rhythm before the main act begins.

Northcote Social Club strives to create a safe space that everyone can enjoy. 
Crowd surfing & dangerous behaviour will result in removal from the venue.
